General Information and Brief History
The Coca Cola drink was created in 1886 in Atlanta by Dr John S. Pemberton, a pharmacist. It started when he created a flavoured syrup then added it to the carbonated water that he had at his pharmacy. The first people to sample what would become the leading carbonated beverage in the world, making billions of profit each year, deemed it 'excellent'. Mr Frank M. Robinson, Mr Pemberton's partner, is credited with naming the beverage as well as designing the trademarked script used today. Prior to the pharmacist's death, he sold portions of his business, and under new leadership, they expanded the business to soda fountains beyond Atlanta. In 1984, a man named Joseph Biedenharn installed bottling machinery in the back of his soda fountain in Mississippi, as a response to growing demand and desire to make the beverage portable. He is recognised today is the first to put Coca - Cola in bottles. Soon, the large scale bottling was made possible through the purchase of the bottling rights, which were sold to the company in 1899 for just $1. Benjamin Thomas, Joseph Whitehead and John Lupton developed what became the Coca - Cola worldwide bottling system.

The first marketing efforts were executed through free coupons enabling samples of the beverage. This was deemed an innovative marketing tactic in 1887 and was followed by newspaper advertising and the distribution of promotional items to participating pharmacies. Today, Coca Cola advertisements can be seen globally and extensively on billboards, vending machines, in shops and online ads. The original cost of the beverage was 5 cents, but has since reached an average of $2.50 per 100 grams in Australia. In the first year of sales, an average of nine servings per day were sold. Today, an estimated 1.9 billion daily servings of Coca Cola beverages are sold.
