- In 1999, Coca Cola faced a lawsuit from 1,500 African Americans, soon to grow to 2,000. This was as a result of these African Americans receiving $26,000 less each year. The lawsuit states that the top management of Coca Cola was aware of the discrimination for four years, yet failed to do anything about it. To rebuild their reputation, Coca Cola created a diversity council and paid $193 million to settle the lawsuit. Coca Cola has also distributed drinks with a faulty carbon dioxide content. Some of Coca Cola’s ingredients have been investigated as possible carcinogens, but the investigation ceased. The Coca Cola Company, while having issues with this in the past, no longer supports or uses child labour for any of their products. However, there is also concern over human rights abuses in Coca Cola plants in Colombia, but this is yet to be investigated. Coca Cola products, on top of this, have a high sugar and artificial flavour content, so poor regions that can’t afford water are resulted to an unhealthy drinking habit. Coca Cola produces most of its products in plastic, creating a great addition to landfill. In poorer countries, however, glass bottles are recycled up to 70 times.
